At Highland Park Dental Centre, we’ve been taking care of Auckland families for over 35 years, and wisdom tooth removal is one of our most requested procedures.

Dr Michael Zhuo performs wisdom tooth consultations and surgical extractions in-house, right here at our practice on Aberfeldy Avenue. That means we can deal with the majority of the cases right here, in house, and no being shuffled between clinics. Whether you’re dealing with an impacted lower wisdom tooth, a partially erupted molar that keeps getting infected, or teeth that simply never had room to come through properly — we assess, plan, and treat, all under one roof.

Most people ignore wisdom tooth pain the first few times. The swelling eases after some ibuprofen and life moves on. But if the pain keeps returning, it is usually telling you something.

Wisdom teeth are the last to arrive and often the first to cause trouble. When there is not enough room in the jaw for them to come through cleanly, they can become impacted under the gum or bone, erupt at an angle that pushes against the tooth next to it, or partially break through and leave a flap of gum where bacteria can build up. This condition is called pericoronitis, and it can lead to swelling, pain and, in some cases, infection that spreads toward the jaw and neck.

These are situations we deal with regularly. Wisdom tooth removal, particularly when handled by an experienced practitioner, tends to be far less difficult than most people expect, and the longer treatment is delayed, the more complex it can become.

Highland Park Dental Centre has been part of the eastern suburbs community since 1990. We see patients in their late teens getting wisdom teeth out for the first time, and patients in their forties finally dealing with an impacted tooth they have had monitored for years. Whatever your situation, our approach stays the same: take a proper panoramic X-ray, give an honest assessment, explain the options clearly, and let you decide.

Before your appointment, we will provide clear instructions so you know what to expect. This generally covers eating and drinking beforehand, any medication or hydration guidance, and what to bring with you.

If IV sedation is planned, you will also need to arrange transport home and have a responsible adult stay with you during the initial recovery period, since you must not drive yourself after sedation.

When you arrive, the team will confirm your details and review the treatment plan with you before anything begins. If you are having IV sedation, a small cannula is placed and the sedative is given gradually, with most patients feeling calm and drowsy within minutes. Once you are settled, extraction begins.

You will be monitored throughout the appointment and kept comfortable. Afterward, you will rest in the clinic until you are ready to leave with your support person, if one was needed.

Most people are back to light activities within two to three days. Swelling tends to peak around days two and three before gradually easing. Dr Zhuo uses PRF, platelet rich fibrin taken from your own blood, after surgical extractions to support healing and reduce post operative discomfort.

If you had IV sedation, you may also feel drowsy, tired or a little disoriented for the rest of the day. For that period, avoid driving, drinking alcohol, signing legal documents, making important decisions or doing heavy exercise.

Aftercare guidance will depend on your specific treatment and generally covers bleeding, swelling, pain relief, eating and rinsing. If you experience worsening pain, ongoing bleeding, significant swelling, fever or any symptom that concerns you, contact the clinic or seek urgent medical care.
